Common Turf Questions

What makes Practice Sports turf different?

  • Custom cut lengths sold by the foot

  • Made in the USA from premium materials

  • UV-stabilized and cleat-resistant fibers

  • Optional shock padding and Velcro seaming for flexibility

  • Expert support from a team that has installed turf across stadiums, schools, parks, training centers, and home facilities nationwide

What if I need repairs or want to expand my turf area later?

You can easily patch or extend turf installations using the same product. Save your turf name and roll lot number for future matching, and we’ll help you source additional sections or repair kits.

How do I clean and maintain turf?

Maintenance is simple and low-cost:

  • Brush or rake periodically to keep fibers upright.

  • Remove debris, leaves, and dirt.

  • Rinse occasionally with water to keep the surface clean.

  • Inspect seams and edges once or twice a year.

Use mild soap and water for most spills. Avoid harsh chemicals or solvents. If turf is indoors, you can use vacuums designed specifically for turf to remove dust and debris.

Can turf handle cleats or spikes?

Most of our sports turf options are cleat-resistant, suitable for rubber cleats and light steel spikes. For heavy baseball or football use, we’ll recommend a higher face-weight model with stronger backing like our SportScape IV or Gameday Elite Hybrid Turf.

What is artificial turf “face weight” mean, and why does it matter?

Face weight measures how many ounces of turf fiber are used per square yard.

  • Higher face weight (48–68 oz)denser, more durable surface for fields and facilities.

  • Lower face weight (30–36 oz)lighter, more flexible turf for budget-friendly or light-use areas.
It’s the easiest way to compare durability between turf options.

How is turf sold and measured?

All turf is sold by the square foot (or linear foot, depending on roll width).
Most rolls are 15 ft wide, with lengths cut to your specifications. You simply measure your desired length, multiply by the roll width, and we’ll cut it to size.
If you’re not sure how much turf you need, we can help calculate your total coverage area and layout.

How many bags of infill do I need to order for my turf?

Each bag contains 50 lbs of sand. The proper amount is based on the type of turf you are filling with sand - for proper fall height protection and to maintain a turf's full warranty, the depth of the blades must be filled up to a specific ratio. Consult your turf manufacturer for specs. However, here is a good rule of thumb:

Most Landscaping / Sports Long Blade Turf = 1 - 2 lbs per square foot
Most Putting Green (tight pile turf) = 0.75 - 1 lb per square foot (30-50 mesh size blend only)

How to Calculate:

Let's say you have landscaping turf, which requires 1 to 2 pounds of infill per square foot. If you go with the lower end of the recommendation (1 pound per square foot), and you have a certain area of turf, you can multiply that area by 1 pound to find out how much infill you need in total. For example, if you have 500 square feet of landscaping turf:

500 square feet * 1 pound/square foot = 500 pounds of infill

Given that each bag contains 50 pounds of infill, you can divide the total infill needed by the weight per bag to find out how many bags you need to order. In this case:

500 pounds of infill / 50 pounds per bag = 10 bags

So, you would need to order 10 bags of infill for your landscaping turf.

Remember, adjust this calculation according to the specific requirements of your turf and the recommended infill per square foot.

Outdoor Batting Cage with Turf Mat

What Customers Are Saying

“I ordered a full size batting cage, L-screen, turf, and some other miscellaneous parts to put it all together from Practice Sports. Everything was shipped quickly, my order was accurate, and it all appears to be of good quality. Their prices were the best around. I haven't had everything long enough to comment on the durability, but judging from what I'm seeing now, and from what I've seen of a friend's setup, I believe this cage will last us a long time.”
