People installing a windscreen in a large field

“Great customer service and an excellent product. My men’s league baseball team purchased an outfield fence (471ft in length, 5ft for each pole option) and we finally got some nice weather to set it up. Wow! It looks great. Sturdy material and easy to install, this fence has made our baseball field the envy of the city! I appreciated the customer service assisting me with which fence to go with and being there throughout the whole process. I would highly recommend this company and this product.”

Common Field Equipment Questions

Are Spot Covers Necessary for Baseball / Softball Fields?

In short, yes. Spot Covers prevent many elements from causing damage to the high traffic areas on your field, such as the pitcher's mound, home plate, and bases.

Benefits of Spot Covers

  • Moisture Management: Spot covers help maintain the ideal moisture balance in your infield clay, especially around the pitcher’s mound and other key dirt areas. They keep the surface from drying out too quickly under the sun and prevent too much moisture when it rains.
  • Safer Playing Surface: By keeping dirt areas from turning slick or muddy, spot covers reduce the chance of slips and falls. This adds an extra layer of safety for players, especially around the mound and base paths.
  • Game-Ready Conditions: Using spot covers before or during a rain delay makes post-storm cleanup faster and easier, allowing the game to resume much quicker.
  • Easier Field Maintenance: Because they guard against both weather and daily wear, spot covers cut down on the time and effort it takes to maintain the field. Less raking, filling, and repair work means more consistent playing conditions and lower upkeep costs.

What kinds of fence toppers are available, and how do I choose the right one for my field?

There are three primary styles of fence toppers, each with distinct purposes and features:

  1. Fence Crown — Made of corrugated plastic, this option gives the fence a “big league” appearance. It comes in long coils (100′ or 250′) and is secured with zip ties. It’s cost-effective, lightweight, and includes a specialized installation tool.

  2. Safety Top Cap (Fence Cap) — These snap over the top of chain-link fences, covering exposed edges and reinforcing the top rail. They’re made from UV-stabilized plastic and withstand weather and impact.

  3. Premium Rail & Post Padding (SafeFoam) — Foam padding for fence rails and posts (for poles up to ~2″ diameter). It reduces bounce-back, adds player protection, and offers a polished look.

To choose among them, consider:

  • Whether you want purely cosmetic enhancement (Fence Crown), protection for exposed metal edges (Safety Top Cap), or padding for impact zones (SafeFoam).

  • Fence length and height (longer runs may favor crown or caps).

  • Weather exposure (UV stability matters).

  • Installation method and cost.

What net gauge should I choose for my baseball backstop net, and why does it matter?

The gauge (thickness) of the net directly affects both durability and cost. For baseball backstops:

  • #36 gauge is the most commonly used option, suitable for most high school fields.

  • #42 gauge is a step up, offering longer lifespan with moderate additional cost.

  • Using something lighter, like #18, is typically only recommended for very low-impact or barrier applications (not full backstop use).

  • There’s also ultra-strong material like Dyneema (very thin but extremely durable), which offers professional-grade performance. Contact an expert for your professional backstop.

In short: pick a gauge that balances durability requirements and budget. For most field-level use, #36 or #42 are good choices.

Playbook Installing a Field Spot Cover

Field Covers Buyer’s Guide

The purpose of the spot cover will determine what size it needs to be. For instance, if the cover is going to be used on a typical 18 foot diameter mound during periods of rain, then you’ll want to purchase a 20 foot diameter rain cover to help push rainwater away from the mound and into the grass.
