Common Sports Netting Questions

There are many netting material types. What type of material do I need?

There are two netting material types that we focus on at Practice Sports. Poly and Nylon.

First, the 36 gauge Nylon is the most popular material type. It's a great net for high school players, or if you'd like to get your little leaguer through high school on one net. Nylon by itself isn't water resistant, so if you're using your net outdoors, be sure to add a latex treatment.

Poly is more of a backyard/hobby type of material. It is a plastic material, so it doesn't require an additional treatment to make it water resistant.

What’s the difference between #21, #36 and your other “#s” listed with your netting?

The “#” in our numbers refers to the gauge (or test), which roughly corresponds to the netting weave thickness. Our #21 gauge material has a 2.0 mm diameter thickness while the #36 gauge material has a 2.5 mm thickness. Higher gauge nets are thicker and have greater break strength.

Are your nets "knotted" or knotless? What's the difference?

All of our baseball tunnels and most of our barrier nets use "knotted" netting. Knotted netting means that the twine, where it intersects to create the "grid," is tied in a knot. Knotted netting is superior for direct impact sports usage because it has a higher overall strength and durability. We offer "knotless" backstop and golf netting. Its main advantage is improved line of sight behind home-plate. Knotless golf netting can also result in lower abrasion / friction due to a smoother surface for a smooth ball at a close range to slide across.

What is the best net material for outdoor use?

#36 Nylon is by far our most popular material, but be sure to add latex if you're using nylon outdoors as it is not waterproof on its own.

Poly is inherently waterproof without added treatment, but it does degrade faster than nylon. We consider poly to be more of a hobby material.

Custom Barrier & Backstop Netting: What You Should Know

I'm a facility owner. What type of netting do I need?

We recommend #60 nylon for all of our commercial facility customers. This #60 gauge netting has a break strength of 502 pounds, which means your players can swing hard and repetitively.

Can your netting be used for other sports?

Yes, our netting is commonly used for a variety of sports, i.e. soccer, football, and volleyball. However, the standard 1‑7/8" mesh used in our batting cage nets is not suitable for golf practice. We do have a smaller mesh available specifically for golf.

Why is Nylon the best Batting Cage Netting material?

Breaking Strength is an important feature in the netting industry as a whole. Nylon netting is known for its high break strength. However, when used as a batting cage net, Breaking Strength becomes less important. Because we don’t install our nets tight, the net will rarely, if ever, be tested to its breaking point.

What Customers Are Saying

“At Dingers batting cage in Escondido at the North County Mall, we had a tricky customization request for a shell cage and sliders to make a variety of batting lanes possible. Among all the netting companies we tried to get customizations and floor plans from, Cory from Practice Sports was the only one to deliver. The equipment was delivered on time and they are continuing to help out with the build out after we received and installed the system. Excellent customer service and quality materials. I highly recommend giving Practice Sports, Inc a call for any batting cage needs.”
