Sports Wall Padding | Indoor and Outdoor

Make sure your indoor facility or outside play area is safe by lining the perimeter with sports wall padding. By using durable, visually appealing wall pads, athletes are better protected when they come out of the play area/workout zone. These customizable pads are perfect for basketball courts, gymnastics centers, play areas, and even stadiums.

Read more to learn about the different types of padding, important features, and the difference between indoor and outdoor padding.

Types of Sports Wall Padding

So, we already touched on the fact that there is indoor and outdoor padding to keep all of your play areas safe. Now let’s talk more in-depth about these two types and the other types of padding on the market.

The main goal of sports wall padding is to provide a safe level of absorption upon player impact. With this in mind, you might be surprised by some of the sports that benefit from padding, such as:

  • Baseball
  • Football
  • Gymnastics
  • Wrestling
  • Martial Arts
  • Badmitten
  • Volleyball
  • Soccer
  • Boxing
  • P.E.

If players practice any of these sports in your facility, sports padding is a necessity to keep athletes safe and protect your own liability. While it might seem obvious to add wall padding indoors, it is also important to use padding if you use an outdoor stadium or play area as well. Beyond that, absorption padding is also available for stages, touchdown zone goal posts, and backstops.

Important Features

Wood Backing: Sports wall padding includes a wood backing. By mounting a z-clip to the wood backing, it’s simple to change out worn padding or remove outdoor pads for indoor storage during the off-season.

Foam: Different foam options are available, so pick what works best for your facility. Some examples include:

  • 2″ Medium-Firm – Medium-firm foam meets American Society for Testing and Materials’ (ASTM) requirement F2440 for impact resistance.
  • 1-3/8″ Extra Firm – High-density foam provides a firm response for high-impact activities.
  • 2″ Medium-Firm FR – Meets ASTM E-84-08a for flame retardant.

Cover: Padding covers are typically made of vinyl and polyester. One important thing to look for is that the cover is resistant to mildew, rot, and UV light for aesthetics.

Customization: There are many ways to customize your sports wall padding. First, customize indoor padding with cut-outs for any wall features in your gym, such as door handles, light switches, or fire extinguishers. Next, sports padding is a great way to advertise school pride and/or team names. And lastly, there are many padding options on the market allowing complete customization to create a product that meets your needs.

Fire Resistance: In the unfortunate event that a fire breaks out, the last thing you need to worry about is it spreading further because of your wall pads. When purchasing, make sure you look for fire resistant pads when choosing indoor wall padding.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Padding

When it comes to indoor and outdoor sports wall padding, the two types are very similar. However, there are a couple of key differences to recognize.

Fire Resistant

First, one is fire resistant while the other isn’t. As we mentioned in the important features section, the last thing you want is fire spreading faster with help from indoor wall padding. For this reason, when it comes to indoor padding, choose a fire-resistant cover material. In fact, ASTM E-84-08a  requires indoor padding to be flame-retardant.

On the other hand, outdoor padding is not typically fire-resistant. Because the dangers of fire inside a gym are not the same as those in an outside area, the standards aren’t the same. While the chances of a stadium fire are rare, it is always important to be prepared by following these recommendations.

Wood Backing

And lastly, the other difference between indoor and outdoor sports wall padding is that indoor padding uses an interior grade wood, while outdoor padding uses, you guessed it, an exterior grade wood backing.
